Abstract

This research paper delves into the maritime legacy of Kalinga, a historical region in present-day Odisha, India, and its profound influence in South and Southeast Asia. Through an extensive exploration of historical records, diplomatic archives, and cultural artefacts, this study seeks to trace the multifaceted impact of Kalinga's maritime prowess on the soft power dynamics and peace diplomacy initiatives of the region.

The primary objectives of this research are to comprehensively analyse Kalinga's historical maritime achievements, uncover its soft power strategies, and examine its role as a peace mediator in a complex web of regional interactions. The study employs a rigorous methodology, combining historical analysis, case studies, and diplomatic correspondence to reconstruct the maritime history of Kalinga and its interactions with neighbouring states and civilizations.

Findings from this research reveal that Kalinga, often overshadowed by its contemporaries, such as the Chola and Maurya empires, played a pivotal role in shaping the cultural, economic, and political landscape of South and Southeast Asia. Kalinga's maritime legacy extended far beyond mere trade and navigation, encompassing the dissemination of culture, religion, and language. Moreover, Kalinga's soft power strategies, rooted in diplomacy, art, and economic vitality, left an indelible mark on the region's history.

This study underscores the significance of Kalinga's maritime legacy in understanding the historical intricacies of South and Southeast Asia. By shedding light on the soft power dynamics and peace diplomacy efforts of Kalinga, it illuminates the enduring impact of a region often overlooked in contemporary discourse. The findings not only enrich our understanding of ancient maritime history but also provide valuable insights for modern diplomacy and cultural exchange in the region.
