Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a leading modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Healthcare students and hospital staff are key to prevention, early detection and patient education. This study assessed knowledge and attitude towards hypertension prevention and control among medical, dental, nursing students and paramedical staff in four tertiary hospitals in India.
Methods: Cross-sectional study with 250 participants (100 MBBS, 50 BDS, 50 Nursing, 50 Paramedical). A structured questionnaire: a 15-item knowledge section (scored 0–15) and a 15-item attitude section using a 5-point Likert scale (score range 15–75). Demographics, training exposure and self-reported practices were recorded. Descriptive statistics, group comparisons (ANOVA / Kruskal–Wallis), chi-square tests, and correlation between knowledge and attitude scores were done.
Results: Mean knowledge score (max 15) — MBBS 12.0 (SD 1.5), BDS 9.5 (SD 2.0), Nursing 10.5 (SD 1.8), Paramedical 9.0 (SD 2.2).

 Overall weighted mean = 10.6/15. Mean attitude score (max 75) — MBBS 60 (SD 6), BDS 52 (SD 7), Nursing 55 (SD 6.5), Paramedical 50 (SD 7.5).

Between-group differences were statistically significant (ANOVA p < 0.001). Knowledge and attitude correlated positively (Pearson r ≈ 0.56, p < 0.001). Only ~40% reported adequate prior training in hypertension counseling.

Conclusions: Knowledge and positive attitudes toward hypertension prevention were highest among MBBS students and lower among BDS and paramedical staff. Structured education and interprofessional training in hypertension prevention and counseling are recommended.
